Riverton City Blues
Today we see an announcement of yet another fire generating larges volumes of smoke.
Though the worst fire seen in years is over, Jamaicans are still reeling from the effects of the fire at the Riverton City dump. There has been an upsurge in sinusitis and asthma and no one can say for sure what if any long term effects there may be. The Ministry of Health recently revealed that air quality testing showed high levels of benzene as a result of the Riverton fire. Acute benzene exposure can cause breathing difficulties, including exacerbation of asthma, dizzyness, headaches tremors confusion and palpitations. More prolonged benzene exposure such as occurred recently has been linked to the development of anemia, immune suppression, menstrual irregularities and cancers such as leukemia.
Exposed persons need to be vigilant. Anyone with lung disorders such as asthma or emphysema should ensure they have and use their medication as prescribed. Houses occupied by such persons should be thoroughly cleaned to ensure any dust from the fire is removed. Persons with prolonged or severe sinus congestion should be seen by their family doctor to ensure an infection has not developed. In the months and years to come persons should be vigilant and any fatigue or generalized weakness or weight loss that cannot be explained should prompt a visit to the doctor.
